Motorcycle accidents have the potential to be extremely serious due to the lack of biker protection coupled with insufficient insurance. Under Florida law most bikers are not required to wear a helmet.
Motorcycles usually present a small profile and can be easily overlooked by even a diligent motorist; let alone a driver who is texting. To compound the problem, Florida law does not require bikers to carry uninsured motorist coverage and does not require automobile drivers to carry bodily injury liability coverage resulting in an absence of insurance in many motorcycle accidents.
I enjoy riding my Harley Davidson Road King and I love the feel of the open road. My wife rides with me and it gives us a chance to spend time together. We take pride in the charitable donations generated by the various poker runs. We are extremely mindful, however, of the associated risks.
We have friends who have been seriously injured while riding. As an attorney representing bikers injured as the result of the negligence of others I strongly encourage bikers to ensure they have sufficient uninsured motorist coverage.
Uninsured motorist coverage pays your medical expenses, lost wages and other damages when the at-fault motorist lacks sufficient bodily injury liability insurance to cover your damages. It is a must; purchase the insurance. You can’t count on the at-fault driver having enough insurance to cover your losses.
